The Old Woman and Her Maids
It was the practice of an old and thrifty widow to call her twomaids to their work every morning at cock-crow.
The maids disliked this early rising, and determined to wring the cock’s neck, for they thought that by waking theirmistress so early he was the cause of their discomfort.
Their cleverness failed to relievethem, however, for the old lady, missing her usual alarm, and afraid ofoversleeping herself, frequently mistook the time and roused the maids atmidnight.
